| A King in Our Backyard District 19's Nathan Gong was recently awarded the title of 2025 King of Bridge, a scholarship awarded by the ACBL Education Foundation to a graduating high school senior. Nathan got his start in Bridge at the Bridge For Youth summer camp in Seattle. He has since become an evangelist for Bridge and has done fundraising for the Education Foundation by combining his interests in woodworking with his enjoyment of Bridge. All hail our very own "King in the North", Nathan Gong! |

 | Summer 2025 ACBL Board of Directors Meetings Report Tim White, our region's representative to the ACBL Board of Directors, posted reports from the summer 2025 meetings held July 21 through July 24 in Philadelphia. You can read the full report on the D19 website here (PDF). Below are some key takeaways from the report: |

|
Finances: In June 2025, both revenues and expenses were better than the budgeted amounts as well as better than monthly outcomes from the prior year. The balance sheet for the organization remains strong with $13.7M in cash and investments and $5.5M in deferred revenue from future membership. Membership: As of July 2025, the total number of ACBL members is 121,499, a decrease of 5.96% (7,707) versus the trailing 12 months. YTD, new members total 4,145, which is an increase of 2.42% (98) vs. this time last year. Growing the Game: Related task forces have created a member incentive framework, called Sapphires, intended to reward progress and participation in activities separate from awards for Bridge achievement. Sapphires can be used in combination with currency to purchase exclusive branded items. Guest Memberships: Guest memberships have been simplified and are integrated with the Sapphire program. Guest memberships are now free and no longer expire but can only be used for up to 20 masterpoints of play. Supporting Units & Districts: A series of recommendations were put forth at the summer meetings, including ending online events during regionals, optimizing tournament schedule recommendations, expanding pre-registration to regionals and sectionals, and offering lighter staffing options when appropriate. Combating Online Cheating: Since Feb 1, 2024, 12,089 players have been submitted for EDGAR screening with a total of 37,875 examined. Approximately 900 players (2.37%) have subsequently been charged or received Official Warnings. The current online cheating rate, which includes all players, is estimated to be between 2.5% and 3%. Revisions to Disciplinary Regulations: To address what was deemed a disproportionate response to online cheating, the Board approved a series of changes proposed by Management to allow club discretion for suspended players, a re-review of Pre-2022 cheating cases, and revisions to the Ethics Certification and Fair Play Pledge. Other Key Areas from the Report: Revisions to the Unit President's Handbook, Governance streamlining continues, Revised Hall of Fame procedures, International Stakeholders Task Force formation, Fall 2028 NABC experimental model proposal, new masterpoint class (Titanium) under exploration, NABC site selection update for 2031, Appointments to the board and committees. |
